Week 6 Shows How Hard NFL Picks Are

October 19, 2009

If you don’t think that making NFL picks is hard, just look at some of the week 6 results. The average gambler doesn’t realize that the difference between the best and worst teams in the NFL may be a couple of key players and coaching. Either way, even the worst teams have a chance to win on any given Sunday.

The Oakland Raiders offense has been nothing short if dismal this season. Any team that is a 15 point underdog at home can’t be good! Despite facing a Philadelphia Eagles squad that has been lighting up the scoreboard offensively, the Raiders defense was able to hold them under 10 points. Phily’s scored over 33 points in 3 of their first 4 games, but their schedule has been soft. The newly acquired Richard Seymour led by example Sunday as he exploded for 4 solo tackles, 2 sacks and a forced a fumble. This along with great play by the Raiders DB’s stopped the Eagle offense cold in their tracks. Who’d have ever thought that Oakland would be in this game nevertheless win it!

The average Joe wouldn’t have thought that the stout New York Giants defense could possibly allow the Saints to run wild like they have done against much weaker teams. As a professional handicapper you learn that certain situations will outweigh a teams previous performance. The Saints were at home off of a bye while the Giants have played somewhat of a cup-cake schedule. Bettors tend to use past performance as a barometer for future results. Doing your homework and understanding the point spread as well as the situation is critical when making football predictions. As we all saw, the Saints shredded the Giants “D” for 500 yards and 48 points.

Finally we finish with a game in which the winner wasn’t so surprising, but the final score was. The average looking New England Patriots offense finally woke up! Tennessee was expected to come back to reality this season after going 12-4 last season, but nobody thought they would start 0-6. The 59-0 shutout pitched by the Pats was out of control before the 2nd half started. Tom Brady threw for 380 yards and 6 touchdown passes! A complete meltdown by the Titans showed that they have already given up on the 2009 season.

The National Football League is by far the most heavily bet sport in the United States. However, most gamblers lose money year after year because they don’t know what to look for when breaking down a game. Time and knowledge of football handicapping are essential when trying to correctly predict the outcome of a game. If you aren’t sure what to look for then you should seek the help of expert sports handicappers.
