Undefeated Kansas City goes to Indianapolis Sunday
October 10, 2010
The NFL is a very interesting league in that a 3-0 team can be a touchdown + underdog to a 2-2 team. Strength of schedule is of key importance in this league, and so is reputation. The Indianapolis Colts have won 12+ games for 7 consecutive seasons, and are known as being offensive juggernauts. Regardless of their current 2-2 record, the average sports gambler will take the Colts in this spot. This is the Kansas City Chiefs time to prove everyone wrong!
The Chiefs caught the San Diego Chargers off guard in their first game of the season as they won by a score of 21-14. They followed that up with a tough win against a horrible Browns team, and then blew out a disgruntled San Francisco squad that can’t figure which way is up. Kansas City faces the most grueling part of their schedule in the next 2 weeks as they play Indy and Houston on the road. They currently rank 25th in passing yards allowed, but that ranking is sure to sky-rocket as they face 2 of the best QB’s in the game.
Jamal Charles and Thomas Jones have done great in sharing time in the backfield. They both have 200+ yards and have each scored 1 touchdown. Charles has had far fewer attempt, but his 7+ yards per carry make him a threat every time he touches the ball. It is crucial that the KC running backs help to sustain drives and keep Peyton Manning and the explosive Colts offense off of the field. Quarterback Matt Cassel hasn’t come close to achieving the level of excellence that was expected of him when the Chiefs got him after a tremendous season in New England. Obviously the Patriot offensive scheme was better suited for Cassel as it would be for any passing quarterback. He will need to step up his game dramatically if Kansas City is to sustain the level of play that they have shown through the first 3 games.
The Colts haven’t had any trouble scoring this year as they are averaging 29 points per game. Their main concern is on defense where they have lost 2 games despite scoring 28 and 24 points. The problem for the Colts in this game is that they are 29th in the league in rushing yards allowed, and they are playing a team that is averaging 160 yards + per game in that area. Many NFL experts and football handicappers are assuming that this is a perfect time for Indy to explode and for the Chiefs to go in the tank, but I’m not sold.
This may end up being a far closer game than everyone anticipates, so tune in Sunday as the last undefeated team in the league fights to maintain that status!
