Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Preview: Boise St vs. TCU
January 4, 2010
Perhaps the most anticipated game of the bowl season features two of the most explosive offenses in all of college football. The 6th ranked Boise St. Broncos take on the 4th ranked TCU Horned Frogs Monday night in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. Outside of the BCS National Championship between Texas and Alabama, no game has been more hyped. Both of these undefeated teams come from non-BCS conferences, and would like to have proven themselves in the big game. However, this game should be as good as expected as this will be a showcase for all of the small-schools that have been looked over during the BCS era.
The Broncos began the season with a shocking victory over a highly touted Oregon Ducks squad that had come into the year with high expectations. The most impressive part of that win was that they held the high-octane offense of Oregon to only 8 points. Oregon did not even record a 3rd down until the 3rd quarter on Boise’s blue turf. Many schools have turned the Broncos down in regards to playing a home & home schedule as they have proven to be a tough opponent to even the best college programs. The one glaring omission to Boise’s schedule is the lack of strength. Outside of their win against Oregon, they have not played another team in the top 25. Wins against solid teams like Fresno St and Nevada are nice, but expected. The problem with those 2 victories was the amount of points that the Broncos surrendered. This does not bode well against a Horned Frogs team that has been hammering teams all season long.
Texas Christian has been on the map for a few years now under the guidance of head coach Gary Patterson. They are clearly having their best year in 2009 as they have won each of their games by an average margin of 40-11. Unlike Boise, the Horned Frogs resume’ is impressive. They disposed of Virginia and Clemson from BCS conferences, and destroyed both of the ranked teams they have played (#16 BYU 38-7; #16 Utah 55-28). Outside of a 3 point win over the spread option of Air Force, they have hammered every team on their schedule. Coach Patterson and their players feel as though they are the best team in the country, and are out to prove just that Monday night against Boise.
Expect a ton of fireworks as both of these teams pull out all of the stops in order to stay unbeaten. Tune in Monday night at 8 pm eastern on FOX as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl promises to be a game for the ages.
