Stanford’s Gerhart Leaves for the NFL
January 17, 2010
After finishing 2nd behind Mark Ingram for the 2009 Heisman trophy, Stanford running back Toby Gerhart has decided to enter the NFL draft.
Gerhart led the Pac-10 in rushing and set a Stanford school record in the process. His 1871 yards on the ground earned him the Doak Walker Award which is given to the nation’s top college running back. The Stanford Cardinal are going to miss his production on the field as he amassed 28 touchdown in 2009 (led the nation).
If NFL scouts have any doubts about his performance, all they will need to do is look at what he did in November of the 2009 season. After rushing for 223 yards in a win against the Oregon Ducks, he led Stanford to another upset win against the USC Trojans with 178 yards on the ground. Stanford head coach is excited for Gerhart, and believes he will be an outstanding player at the next level.
After 3 seasons of growing pains, Gerhart was finally able to help this Cardinal team to a bowl game. Although they lost to Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl, Gerhart felt that he has helped this Stanford team get back into the college football limelight.
It is uncertain how NFL scouts feel about him as a running back at there level, but he will certainly bring a great work ethic and intensity to whatever team decides to draft him.
