St. Petersburg Bowl Preview

December 19, 2009

The Central Florida Knights take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the St Petersburg Bowl on Saturday. UCF had a dramatic turnaround from last years dismal 4-8 record. Of the 4 losses they suffered this season, 3 of them came at the hands of ranked opponents. Their signature win was against an explosive Houston team that was on a 5 game winning streak prior to their match-up. The Knights held the Cougars to 17 points through 3 quarters before giving up 2 late meaningless touchdowns in the 4th.

HC Greg Schiano has turned the Rutgers football program into a household name over the past few seasons. A 9-0 start to the 2006 season put this team on the map and into the Top-25 for the first time in school history. Three consecutive winning seasons have led to 3 consecutive bowl wins. The Scarlet Knights play in what is now considered one of the top conferences in the country. The Big East has been in the BSC conversation for several years now, and with the Cincinnati Bearcats completing a perfect regular season this year, they are again at the top of the college football world. After their tremendous run in 2006, Rutgers has had a target on their back. This season was no different as they lost to Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia.

This game sets up to be a defensive battle as both teams rank towards the top of their respective conferences in that category. Expect Brett Hodges and Tom Savage will have to be mistake free while running their offenses in order to give their teams a chance at winning. Tune in Saturday as the Bowl season opens with a battle between UCF and Rutgers.
