Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Preview: SMU vs. Nevada
December 24, 2009
At full strength, the Nevada Wolfpack offense is dynamic. They have scored over 60 points 4 times this season, and have the ability to move the ball at will. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and RB’s Lippencott and Taua have each rushed for over 1000 yards this year on the way to leading Nevada to an 8-4 record. However, two-thirds of their running trio will not suit up for the game on Thursday. Luke Lippincott suffered a season-ending toe injury, and Vai Taua will be academically ineligible.
The Wolfpack struggled early this season without their 2 star running backs, but were able to win 8 of their last 9 games with them back in the line-up. It will be hard to determine if this young and inexperienced SMU Mustangs defense will be able to contain Nevada’s running game because of it’s style.
The Mustangs are the most improved team in the country with 7 wins this year after winning just 1 in 2008. An easy schedule has certainly helped them become bowl-eligible, but the hiring of former Hawaii HC June Jones it what has turned this program around.
Expect an inspired effort Thursday night as Jones takes his Mustangs squad back to his old stomping grounds in Hawaii. The line for this match-up is just under 2 touchdowns. Under normal circumstances with both teams at full strength, this line would be closer to 3 touchdowns. If SMU can key in on Wolfpack QB Kaepernick, they will have a good chance at slowing down this potent offense. Tune in to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Thursday Night.
