Playoff Baseball Picks Come Down to Wire
October 2, 2009
After all of the talk of adding an additional “wildcard” team to the MLB playoff race due to lack of excitement coming down the stretch, the tide has turned with several key races to end the season. At the beginning of the season many expert made baseball predictions that didn’t involve Minnesota or Colorado. Now both of these teams find themselves in a position to get in.
The Twins have won 7 of their last 10 and now find themselves just 2 games behind the slumping Tigers. A critical 4 game series between these teams this week ended in a split. This was big for the Tigers as time is not on the Twins side. They will need Detroit to lose 2 of their last 3 against the White Sox while they sweep the Royals. This poses as a tough task especially since they face potential “Cy Young” candidate Zack Greinke on Saturday. This didn’t look like much of a race a month ago when the Tigers had a comfortable 8 game lead in the division. So much for no excitement at the end of the season as the Twins make Detroit work for their spot in the post-season.
“Rocktober” is here! The Colorado Rockies have been on a tear since Jim Tracy took over this team after Clint Hurdle was fired. They have gone 73-40 since Tracy took over. This is an incredible feat considering they were 10 games under .500 when he came on board. Colorado actually has the potential to win the division as well as having the best record in the NL. With a sweep of the Dodgers they would win the NL West. If the Phillies were to lose 1 game in their series with Florida they would be tied for the best record. Amazing how things change in the course of a couple weeks. Forget the pro’s baseball picks as this weekend will be full of drama in both leagues, so stay close to the TV.
