NCAAB Big-12 Showdown: Kansas St Wildcats vs. Baylor Bears

January 26, 2010

The Kansas St Wildcats will try to get back on track after a tough loss to Oklahoma St last Saturday. Unfortunately for them, they will be facing a very good Baylor Bears squad that has started 15-3, and hopes to crack the top-25 by weeks end. A win in this spot would more than likely get them there.

Kansas St had been on a tear leading up to their loss to the Cowboys. Beating number 1 Texas last week confirmed that this team is a legitimate top 10 team, but they must have bought into the hype when they took on Okie St. It’s a long grueling season, and the Wildcats have too much talent to not make a deep run in the NCAA tourney. However, if they think they will be able to walk through their Big-12 schedule, they are wrong. As of Monday, there is not a single team in the Big-12 that has a losing overall record. They have 3 of the top 13 teams in the country, and 5 teams below them that have 14 wins or more.

Jacob Pullen has taken over as the lead scorer after the loss of Michael Beasley to the NBA. Four of the Wildcats starting 5 average 11.5 points or more per game, which makes it extremely difficult for opposing defenses to key in on 1 or 2 players. Denis Clemente and Jamar Samuels are solid scorers that require their oppositions full attention. Defensively they are adequate, but could use some improvement stopping scoring in the paint.

Baylor presents some major problems for the Wildcats. Ekpe Udoh is a beast inside, and will force K St to drop several men into the paint when he get the ball. This opens up the Bears duo of LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter for open looks from the perimeter. Combined, this tandem averages 35.5 points per game and almost 9 assists. If the Wildcats aren’t careful, they may suffer the same fate as many other ranked teams that suffer their first big loss of the season. Texas has lost 2 consecutive games after getting to the number 1 position.

Tune in Tuesday night at 8pm EST as the Wildcats try to right the ship against a hungry Baylor team that wants a piece of the top-25 pie.
