NBA’s Best and Worst Square off Tuesday Night
February 9, 2010
The best and worst teams in the NBA (based on record) will play Tuesday night in what should be an absolute BLOWOUT! The Cleveland Cavaliers currently have the best record in the NBA, and are vying for the opportunity to compete for the NBA Championship. On the other side of the court from the Cavs will be one of the worst teams in NBA history. When the New Jersey Nets began the season they knew they would have a difficult time competing, but I’m sure they didn’t anticipate having a 4-46 record through their first 50 games.
This may be the last chance that the Cavaliers have to compete for an NBA title with LeBron James leading the way as he has been rumored to be leaving for New York after this season. The distractions regarding his possible departure haven’t been a distraction to his team mates. Adding Shaquille O’Neal in the off-season was a gutsy more by management as many expert felt as through he had nothing left in the tank.
Mo Williams is in his third year as a Cavalier, and his outside shooting has paid off for a team that at one point had no outside threat. His 17 points per game are second to LeBron on the team, and he has also contributed with over 5 assists per game. The main reason for Cleveland’s dominance this year is due to their bench play.
While they don’t have any standout players off the bench, they all know their roles, and execute them to perfection. Much like the Lakers, the Cavaliers play a true “team” style of defense. They allow just over 94 points per game, but have a bend but don’t break mentality defensively that frustrates their opposition.
The Nets are having a miserable season, but this may help them in the long run as most of this team is young. They have several solid players, but not a true All-Star. Brook Lopez has played extremely well this year, contributing 19 points and 9 rebounds per game in his rookie campaign. Devin Harris has done a fine job at point guard, but New Jersey will need to upgrade at that position if they want to compete at eh next level in years to come.
Courtney Lee and Chris Douglas-Roberts are better than average NBA talents that may turn out to be All-Stars. They both have shown signs of improvement throughout the season, and may flourish if they can get through the growing pains they are enduring this season.
These teams are polar opposites in the standings, but it will be interesting to see the contrast in styles and cohesiveness as they face off Tuesday night. Expect Cleveland to get out to a big lead, and then bring in their back-ups to give the starters a rest in the second half.
