Cougars & Aggies Battle in Friday Night Fight

October 1, 2010

The Brigham Young Cougars are off to one of their worst starts in school history. However, don’t let their 1-3 record fool you. They have played one of the best team in the country in Florida St, a team that dominates the clock with their option attack in Air Force and a dynamic aerial attack in Nevada. All 3 of these losses have put the Cougars in a tough position in terms of getting a bowl bid, but the rest of their schedule is rather easy except for TCU. Utah St gave #7 Oklahoma a run for their money in their season opener, but much of that can be attributed to the Sooners lack of enthusiasm.

The Utah St Aggies rank in the bottom 20 of all of division 1 football in points allowed, and will have their hands full Friday against a BYU squad that is capable of lighting up the scoreboard. Jake Heaps is a prototypical Cougars quarterback. He may not have the size of most NFL caliber quarterbacks, but his accuracy and arm strength make up for the difference. Considering that Heaps is a freshman, he had progressed at the level that he would be expected to. His last game against Nevada was by far his best as he passed for 229 yards. His accuracy isn’t where the coaching staff would like it to be, but it will come in time. Playing Utah State’s defense should be just what the doctor ordered as they have allowed over 32 points per game thus far.

The Aggies have done what they were expected to do so far. A win over Idaho St may be the only win they get all season. Two consecutive blowouts on behalf of Fresno St and San Diego St show that this team isn’t nearly as talented as they need to be to contend in the Western Athletic Conference. Diondre Borel is passing at less than a 55% rate thus far, and will have a difficult time increasing that pace against a very capable BYU defense.

The sportsbooks have listed the away team as 4.5 point favorites, and rightfully so. The Cougars have under-achieved this season, while Utah St has played right at the level they were expected to. Overall, the majority of college football handicappers have this game set as a BYU BLOWOUT, but that remains to be seen. I also believe that the Cougars are a far superior team, but until they prove it on the field I will not bet on them. Tune in Friday as the Cougars and Aggies square off in a Friday Night fight that should be more competitive than most football experts believe.
