Charlie Weis out as Head Coach of Notre Dame
December 6, 2009
After the third consecutive season of disappointment, Charlie Weis has been fired from Notre Dame following Saturday’s season-ending loss at Stanford. The Fighting Irish have not been successfully led to meet the high expectations held by this organization as the season ended on a four game losing streak and 6-6 mark.
Weis finished with a record of 35-27 during his five years at Notre Dame holding a winning percentage of .565, a percentage lower than former coaches Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick made the announcement on Monday, further commenting that a replacement had not yet been secured but will be as soon as possible. Weis will leave with 6 years remaining in his 10 year contract, and sources say the school will be responsible for paying out the remainder of this contractual agreement.
Unemployment does not appear to plague Weis’s future for too long as it is reported that several NFL teams have shown interest in possibly attaining him as offensive coordinator in the upcoming season. Weis have not been cut out for the college game, but he has proven with his years under Parcells and Billicheck that he can be one of the top coordinators in the NFL.
