Final Four Review: Duke Pounds W. Virginia in Semi’s

April 4, 2010

When the number 1 seeds were announced 3 weeks ago everyone believed that the only team not worthy of receiving one was the Duke Blue Devils. Apparently not! Mike Kryzewski has put together a tougher version of the teams he’s had over the past several years. Duke has always had the ability to score, but were always a little “soft” defensively. Not anymore! Brian Zoubek is one of the true centers in the college game today. He proved how valuable he is Saturday night against a long and athletic...

CBI Finals: Saint Louis vs. Virginia Commonwealth

March 31, 2010

The College Basketball Invitational is almost an afterthought this time of year due to the drama and excitement of the NCAA tournament. However, two teams are extremely interested in this years CBI tourney. The Saint Louis Billikens and the Virginia Commonwealth Rams will battle Wednesday night in what may be the last game of the tournament. The format is different as the final 2 teams play a best of three series to determine the CBI winner. With VCU taking the first game by a score of 68-56, they...

Final Four Preview: Duke vs. W. Virginia

March 30, 2010

I was absolutely blown away when I took a look back at the West Virginia Mountainteers schedule this season. Not only did they come into the NCAA tournament on a 6 game winning streak, but they did it in the toughest conference in college basketball. Of the Mountaineers 6 losses, only 1 came against a non-tournament team, and 2 were against teams not ranked in the top 25. Now they will face a streaking Duke Blue Devils squad that is looking to add another National Championship to their already impressive...

Final Four Preview: Michigan St vs. Butler

March 29, 2010

The team with the best record out of the remaining 4 schools in the NCAA tournament may surprise you. The #5 seed Butler Bulldogs are 32-4 on the season, and have won an incredible 24 consecutive games. Taking down UTEP and Murray St in the first 2 rounds were to be expected, but following that up with wins against #1 seed Syracuse and #2 seed Kansas St is nothing short of amazing. The onslaught of good teams never stops when you get to this point in the tourney, and it won’t next Saturday as the...

Kansas St and Butler Fight for Spot in Final Four

March 27, 2010

The Kansas St Wildcats escaped with a victory in a hard fought contest against a very good Xavier team Thursday night. The road doesn’t get any easier as they face the Butler Bulldogs for a chance to reach the Final Four. Butler has been the hottest team in the country as they are riding a ridiculous 23 game winning streak into this contest. The Bulldogs have just 4 losses on the season. All of them were against tough opponents. UAB, Minnesota, Georgetown and Clemson were the only teams to get...

Volunteers Take on Red-Hot Buckeyes in Sweet-16

March 26, 2010

It is no coincidence that 3 Big-10 schools remain in the sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. This conference is built on defense, and just like football……defense wins championships! The Purdue Boilermakers may have been the best team in the conference for most of the season, but the loss of their best player (Robbie Hummel) has put them in an underdog position for much of the tournament. There is no question who the hottest team in the Big-10 is. The Ohio St Buckeyes are riding a 9 game winning...

Virginia Tech Takes on Rhode Island in NIT Quarterfinals

March 24, 2010

The Virginia Tech Hokies will take on the Rhode Island Rams in the NIT quarterfinals Wednesday night. Despite the similarities in record, these teams couldn’t be further apart in terms of strength of schedule. Rhode Island comes into this match-up as winners of 4 of their last 5, including wins against Northwestern and Nevada in the first 2 rounds National Invitational Tournament. However, they have dropped games to teams like Saint Louis, UMASS and Virginia Commonwealth this season. This spells...

NIT Quarterfinals: Texas Tech vs. Mississippi

March 23, 2010

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have had a roller coaster type season. After coming out of the blocks with a 9-0 record, they stubbed their toe against a feisty Wichita St squad. Their only other pre-conference game loss was to a New Mexico Lobo’s team that ended up as a 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. However, the Red Raiders obviously weren’t ready for the grueling grind of the Big-12 this year as they went just 4-12 in conference which left them out of the “Big Dance” all together. After an...

NIT 2nd Rd Showdown: Connecticut v. Virginia Tech

March 22, 2010

The NIT has some interesting 2nd round match-ups. The Virginia Tech Hokies against the Connecticut Huskies seems like a game that we would find in the second round or sweet-16 round of the NCAA tournament, but in fact they will be battling Monday night for a chance to move on and perhaps win the National Invitational Tournament. The Huskies spent much of their season searching for their identity. The absence of head coach Jim Calhoun for several games due to health problems didn’t help the cause....

7/10 Seed Match-Up: Clemson/ Missouri

March 19, 2010

One of the most difficult 7/10 match-ups to handicap will take place Friday afternoon as the Clemson Tigers and Missouri Tigers battle in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Both teams faired well in their respective conferences, but I feel that it will be the strength of the conferences themselves that will determine who escapes this first round collision. Clemson started the year 15-3 before the lost 3 consecutive games in the ACC to Georgia Tech, Duke and Boston College. They stumbled through...
