AT&T Cotton Bowl Preview: Oklahoma St. vs. Mississippi

January 2, 2010

The Mississippi Rebels and the Oklahoma St Cowboys meet in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Saturday at 2pm Eastern. The Rebels started the season in the pre-season Top-10, but since a loss to S. Carolina in week 3 they have fallen out of the top 25 altogether. Oklahoma St ended the year with a humiliating shutout loss to the Sooners, but they have plenty of reasons to be proud of their 2009 season.

An opening game win vs. a highly rated Georgia team was a tremendous start to the year for the Cowboys. Unfortunately, they must have not realized that they had a game the following week as the Houston Cougars came in and dropped 45 on them. After righting the ship for a few games they then ran into Colt McCoy and the dynamic offense of the Texas Longhorns. Losing to Texas is nothing to hang your head about, but getting shutout by a down Oklahoma team with their second string quarterback is. Expect this well coached team to close the season out with a solid performance in the Cotton Bowl.

Pre-season Heisman hopeful Jevan Snead and the Mississippi Rebels failed to follow through on what was supposed to be a great season. Two early losses took the Rebels out of the BCS discussion. With a big bowl game out of the picture, Ole Miss didn’t seem to be playing with the same desire towards the end of the season. Unexplainable losses to Auburn and Mississippi St are a clear indication that this team has given up on this season. Expect more of the same in the Cotton Bowl as they will be facing an Oklahoma St team that is very capable of putting a beating on them.

Predictions on college football games aren’t easy. Many times you can find a point spread that gives you a tremendous amount of value, and other times a certain situation may make a particular game profitable. This is a case were the situation clearly favors one team over the other. Either way, this will be a very entertaining game as both teams try to make up for their embarrassing losses at the end of the regular season.
