2009 Army/ Navy Game Preview
December 12, 2009
The rivalry continues Saturday in the 110th meeting between Army and Navy. The Midshipmen have the upper-hand winning 53 times to Army’s 49 over the last 119 years. While neither team has been considered an “elite” program for quit some time, this game is still exciting due to its rich history.
Over the last 10 seasons, the Black Nights of Army have won and covered only 1 game (2001). Navy’s average margin of victory over this decade has been 20.6 points. The emergence of Ricky Dobbs as a solid quarterback that can run, has nullified the fact that Navy had only 4 returning starters on offense this season. Dobbs has passed for 840 yards and 4 touchdowns in a run based offense. The most important thing he brings to this offense is the ability to run. He has rushed for 913 yards and 23 TOUCHDOWNS this season! The combination of Dobbs and starting RB Murray has combined for almost 1800 yards on the ground. The Black Nights are not exactly known for their run defense. They have given up 1642 yards on the ground (almost 150 per game) in 2009, and now face a Navy team that put up 368 yards on the ground against them in 2008.
Provided there are not a tremendous amount of turnovers, the Midshipmen should continue this decade’s trend with another one-sided blowout. The Black Knights may be riding a 2 game winning streak coming into this game, but Virginia Military Academy and North Texas are clearly several notches below Navy. Regardless of the outcome, the Army/ Navy game is always a compelling match-up.
